2011 Staley Prize for Robbins’s Becoming Sinners

SAR member and former executive committee member Joel Robbins, professor of anthropology at University of California, San Diego, has received the J. I. Staley Prize from the School of Advanced Research. The prize was awarded for Robbins’s first book, Becoming Sinners: Christianity and Moral Torment in a Papua New Guinea Society (California, 2004), an ethnography of the Urapmin of Papua New Guinea and how they deal with “the contradictions that followed their wholesale adoption of Christianity while remaining embedded in Urapmin social morality” (Society for Advanced Research web site).
